Maserati Alfieri concept coupe makes love in Geneva

When it comes to beautiful cars, few can rival Maserati for their ability to combine sport, luxury, and beauty into one package. At the Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland, they unveiled the probable next-generation of that tradition for breathtaking excellence with a new concept coupe called the Alfieri.

Named for one of the company’s founders, the Maserati Alfieri is gorgeous beyond words. It may not make production as-is, but during the Alfieri’s unveil, the Italian automaker said it was something of a design study for a planned production car. That’s close enough to saying it will be on showroom floors that we’ll accept it as such.

The Alfieri is a 2+2 sports coupe that would replace the GranTurismo. It’s using the same chassis as the MC Stradale, though shorter, and has the same 4.7-liter, 454 horsepower V8 and transaxle as is featured in other Trident models. Maserati hints at more, saying that both that V8 and the V12 version of the engine will fit within the Alfieri’s engine compartment.

The terms “sports car” and “sport” were used extensively during the concept’s unveiling, hinting that the company will be moving away from the luxurious road style and comfort at the expense of sportiness that was the hallmark of the GranTurismo.

The entire design of this new Maserati Alfieri is elegant and fast with design hints that come from its inspiration, the A6 GCS, which introduced exactly fifty years ago. Note the rounded nose, steel spoke wheels, and flowing curves.

Truly a great car and one that we will look forward to seeing the production version of, which Maserati says could be as soon as 2016.
