Volkswagen plans to bring two unveils to the New York International Auto Show this week. The first is a revamp of the popular VW Jetta and the other a ready-for-production conceptual of a diesel Golf SportWagen TDI.
The 2015 Volkswagen Jetta sees new styling, upgraded safety technologies, higher fuel efficiency, and added content. On the exterior, the car’s looks see only subtle changes with some updates to the grille, fenders, and deck lid – most aimed towards improved aerodynamics. Inside, however, several additions include Blind Spot Detection, rear cross-traffic alert, frontal collision warning system, and more. Under the hood, the new diesel engine offers 45 mpg on the highway. Part of this efficiency gain is thanks to active grille shutters.
The Golf SportWagen is a station wagon version of the Golf GTI, which debuted earlier this year. This concept uses the MQB modular architecture of the Golf series, improving manufacturing efficiency, and will be offered in both 1.8-liter turbo and TDI clean diesel powertrains. It will hit showrooms in early 2015. This SportWagen is lighter and slightly larger than the current Jetta SportWagen, which is ceasing production soon. It features a lower drag coefficient and more cargo room as well. EPA estimates for MPG are not available, but Volkswagen says it will improve over the current Jetta SportWagen by 17 percent in its gasoline option.
