NRG eVgo Helps Renters Charge Electric Vehicles in California

Press release

First-ever statewide Take Charge campaign provides electric vehicle charging station option for multi-family housing communities

PRINCETON, N.J. March 12, 2015 – NRG eVgo, a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NRG), today announced Take Charge, a program designed to help California renters reliably charge their electric vehicles (EVs) at home. NRG eVgo is offering charging station installation at no cost to qualified apartment communities, giving California apartment residents many more reasons to consider the more than 30 models of electric vehicles expected to be available over the coming year.

“Renters could be left out of the EV movement unless they have a reliable option for charging their cars at home,” said Terry O’Day, vice president of business development at NRG eVgo. “As demand for electric vehicles rises in California, we believe that everyone should have access to at-home charging. For a limited time, multi-family housing communities are eligible for upgrades to support electric vehicle charging at no cost to qualified property owners.”

The Take Charge tour launches on March 27 and runs through June 2015, with stops planned in cities across California, including Fremont, San Jose, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Torrance, Long Beach, Huntington Beach and San Diego. Live events in each city will provide residents with an inside look at owning an EV, and hear about the special opportunity to get EV charging capabilities at home. Interested community members can request charging where they live and enter for a chance to win prizes including a 3-year lease on a new Nissan LEAF® or $12,500. Kia® Soul EVs will be on display in each city for attendees to get a firsthand look at the brand’s first-ever fully electric vehicle sold in the U.S.

“Driving an EV saves time, money and the environment, and we want this opportunity to be available to everyone,” added O’Day. “For rental property owners, we find that offering charging on-premises raises property value and creates competitive advantage.” NRG eVgo also has a similar no-cost program available across most of California for employers who would like to offer the electric vehicle charging at work.

Nearly half of all EVs sold in the U.S. are sold in California, and a state mandate requires that by 2025, there be at least 1.5 million zero emission vehicles on California’s roads. In this year’s state of the state speech, Governor Brown announced a goal to reduce California’s petroleum consumption by 50 percent. By installing new charging stations across California including multi-family communities, NRG eVgo is working to help the state meet these goals.
