Resetting Engine Light On Toyota Vehicles – DIY Friday

Many of today’s vehicles have a maintenance interval warning that turns on the engine light on the dashboard. Most Toyota vehicles have included this since about 2008. The procedure to reset that light, if you’re a do-it-yourself maintenance mechanic, is simple and is the same on every Toyota vehicle made after 2008. Some other manufacturers also follow these same procedures for reset.

First, start the engine while in park or neutral and with the parking brake set. Press the trip odometer button until the display shows “Trip A”. Shut off the engine, then press and hold the trip odometer button again. Keep it pressed and turn the ignition to “on” (do not start the car).

When the mileage flashes “000000”, the computer has been reset. Turn off the ignition and wait three seconds, then start the engine. The engine warning light should now be off. If not, repeat. If it still stays on, you may have another problem and will need to pull the codes from your ECM.
