Essential Equipment You Need to Survive a Car Breakdown

What do you do when your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere? Do you immediately contact roadside assistance or try fixing the problem yourself?

Car breakdowns are never far from reach. Whether it is a dead battery or a flat tire, you are bound to deal with the issue at some point. Car breakdown is a particularly potent problem for individuals who use their vehicles in inclement weather

With the availability of mobile phones, breakdowns have been reduced from being a dangerous situation to a minor inconvenience. However, roadside assistance could cost you more than you might be ready to spend. Additionally, they may take a long time to arrive, especially in a remote area.

For these two reasons, it may be a good idea to prepare yourself with a few emergency items that can help you survive a car breakdown.

Jumper Cables

Jumper cables, or jump starters, are essential equipment to have when your car battery dies, provided you can find another driver willing to lend a hand. Many drivers have these jumper cables in their vehicles but do not know how to use them. Make sure you familiarize yourself with how they work.

Luckily, most of these pieces of equipment come with a manual and instructions for use.

A Spare Tire

A spare tire is perhaps the most important item to have in your vehicle. After all, flat tires are the most common roadside emergency today. Most cars today come with a replacement tire, so chances are yours already has one.

However, it is essential to check the pressure of the spare tire to ensure it is in good condition for use.

Tool Kit

A tool kit is a box that contains a wide range of tools that can come in handy in case of a car breakdown. These tools can include a jack, screwdriver, adjustable locking pliers, a basic socket set, among others. If you have a problem such as a flat tire, you will need a jack, an adjustable spanner and perhaps a screwdriver to unscrew the hubcaps.

Without a toolbox with these items, you might be in a big problem, especially if your car breaks down in areas where you can’t get immediate help.

A First Aid Kit

Although it may seem like a simple box with less significance, a first aid kit can help save a life. If your car gets in an accident and anyone gets injured, a first aid kit can allow you to do something as you wait for a medical team to arrive. Some of the items you should have in a simple first aid kit include bandages, adhesive tapes, antiseptic spray and cotton swabs, among others.

Flashlight

A flashlight is the other item you might require when your car breaks down in the dark. Without proper lighting, there are certain car repairs you might not be able to carry out. For instance, it is not easy to change a flat tire in the dark. So, make sure you invest in a high-quality, heavy-duty flashlight and makes sure it is waterproof.
