2027 Toyota Highlander Announced As All-Electric and Made in the USA

With sales scheduled to begin in late 2026 and into early 2027, the 2027 Highlander is a transformation.

Toyota has officially lifted the curtain on the next-generation 2027 Highlander, and this iconic three-row SUV has been completely reimagined for the electric era. Gone is the traditional gas or hybrid powertrain and in its place is a bold battery-electric SUV (BEV) designed to blend striking style, modern comfort, and real-world performance.

For 2027, the Highlander steps confidently into the EV landscape as Toyota’s first U.S.-assembled three-row BEV, a major milestone for the brand. Built in Kentucky with battery modules produced in North Carolina, this SUV showcases Toyota’s commitment to electrification right here in the U.S. market.

Toyota describes the new Highlander as a “stylish, high-tech leader” in the midsize SUV segment — and it’s easy to see why. The exterior design shuns conservative crossover cues for a sleeker profile with clean lines, broad fenders, full-length LED lighting, and flush door handles that enhance both aesthetics and aerodynamics.

Under the skin, the Highlander BEV delivers real electric-vehicle performance. Available in XLE and Limited trims with either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), the SUV offers:

  • Up to 320 miles of estimated range on AWD models with the larger 95.8-kWh battery
  • Up to 338 combined system horsepower and 323 lb-ft of torque on AWD trims
  • A fully electrified platform with Toyota’s signature engineering focus on balance and refinement

Fast DC charging compatibility via the North American Charging System (NACS) port ensures access to a widespread network of high-speed chargers, making longer journeys more convenient.

Step inside and the Highlander’s tech-forward cabin immediately makes an impression. A large 14-inch central touchscreen pairs with a 12.3-inch driver display, while customizable ambient lighting and ample USB-C charging points throughout all three rows elevate everyday usability.

The SUV seats up to seven passengers, and with the third row folded flat, cargo space opens up to more than 45 cubic feet; perfect for gear, groceries, or weekend getaways. A panoramic glass roof (available on select trims) enhances the airy, open feel of the cabin.

Toyota also equips the Highlander with some next-level practical tech:

  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, which can power external devices or serve as backup power during outages
  • Toyota Audio Multimedia with 5G connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Advanced safety suite Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 with active driver assistance systems

With sales scheduled to begin in late 2026 and into early 2027, the 2027 Highlander is a transformation. It ushers Toyota’s most familiar family SUV into the electric future without compromising the comfort, capability, and practicality fans expect.
