Tesla unveiled a new Model Y compact crossover based on the Model 3 compact car. The Model Y is expected in the 2020 model year, will seat up to seven (in the 2021 model year), and has an expected starting price of $39,000. Tesla plans four variants of the Y, starting with the Standard Range base model, a Long Range option, a Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive model, and a Performance variant.
The Standard Battery will have a 230-mile expected range while the Model Y Long Range will have a 300-mile range per charge. The Model Y will be compatible with all Tesla Supercharger stations, including the new V3. The Y will not come with free access, using a charging scheme similar to that of the Model 3.
The new Tesla Model Y will have split-fold seating, a rear liftgate, four standard swing-out doors, a “frunk,” and a total of 66 cubic feet of storage. And a 5.9-second 0-60 mph acceleration time with a top speed of 120 mph. The Performance model will have 0-60 times of as little as 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph.
Deliveries for the Model Y are expected for the fall of 2020, starting with the Model Y Performance model ($55,700), Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive ($42,700), and the Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive ($46,700). The Standard Range model will be available in the spring of 2021 at a $39,000 base price. Tesla has not yet announced when pre-orders will open for the new crossover model.
