Hyundai, GM To Co-Develop Vehicles in Strategic Partnership

This will include a commercial electric van for North America.

Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors have detailed their first five co-developed vehicles under their strategic partnership. These vehicles will cover several global markets.

Key Plans:

  • Four models for Central & South America: a compact SUV, a compact car, a compact pickup, and a mid-size pickup — all adaptable for ICE or hybrid power.
  • One model for North America: an electric commercial van.
  • Leadership split: GM heads development of the mid-size truck platform; Hyundai leads on the compact vehicles and the electric van.
  • Production goals: over 800,000 annual sales once scaled.
  • Launch timeline: Central & South America models debut in 2028; the U.S.-built electric van arrives as early as 2028.
  • Vehicles will share platforms but feature brand-specific interiors and exteriors.
  • Companies will also pursue joint sourcing for materials, logistics, and raw materials, plus explore low-carbon steel and other sustainable manufacturing methods.
  • Partnership stems from a September 2024 framework agreement, with more joint programs and propulsion tech collaborations (ICE, hybrid, BEV, hydrogen) under consideration.
