At the 84th running of the Daytona 200 (March 5–7, 2026), BMW Motorrad is marking a golden anniversary in American Superbike racing with the debut of the BMW R 1300 R Superhooligan. The one-off custom machine honors the 50th anniversary of Steve McLaughlin’s dramatic 1976 Daytona Superbike victory and Reg Pridmore’s championship-winning season in the inaugural AMA Superbike Championship.
Both McLaughlin and Pridmore raced for Butler & Smith aboard the now-legendary BMW R 90 S, launching BMW into U.S. Superbike lore with a stunning 1–2 Daytona finish on March 6, 1976. That same year, Pridmore went on to secure the first AMA Superbike title—cementing BMW’s racing credentials stateside.
A Custom Tribute Built In-House
The R 1300 R Superhooligan is the work of a dedicated team inside the BMW Motorrad Custom Speed Shop. Using the 145-hp (107-kW) BMW R 1300 R as a foundation, the team transformed the roadster into a purpose-built, naked superbike homage—blending modern performance with throwback race styling cues.
Visual nods to 1976 include:
- The iconic #83 race number
- BMW R 90 S-era paintwork on the front fenders and tank panels
- Classic superbike design touches like bold number plates and wide handlebars
Blue accents—echoing components from the BMW M 1000 RR—highlight the aluminum rear frame, brake calipers, and suspension hardware, including a fully adjustable Wilbers upside-down fork extended by 30 mm for greater lean-angle clearance.
Built to Perform
This is more than a static tribute. Capable of speeds up to 275 km/h (171 mph), the Superhooligan is engineered for serious track duty. Performance upgrades include:
- Carbon-fiber front wheel from the BMW M 1000 RR
- Extensive carbon components from BMW Motorrad and Ilmberger
- Titanium Akrapovič exhaust with carbon end silencer
- Fully adjustable levers from Advik
- Milled BMW Motorrad rearsets
BMW Motorrad brand ambassador Nate Kern will campaign the machine in the Mission Foods Super Hooligan series during the MotoAmerica Daytona 200 weekend, giving the tribute bike a proper racing stage.
Reuniting the Legends
As part of the 50th anniversary celebration, the R 1300 R Superhooligan will be displayed alongside the original Butler & Smith race-prepped BMW R 90 S—provided by BMW Group Classic from the BMW Museum. Surviving legends from the 1976 season, including McLaughlin, Pridmore, Udo Gietl, and members of Gary Fisher’s family, will reunite in Daytona to commemorate the milestone.
In 1976, BMW’s U.S. importer Butler & Smith seized the opportunity presented by the newly formed AMA Superbike Series. With engine tuning by Udo Gietl and chassis work by Todd Schuster, the BMW R 90 S evolved from sporty road machine to championship-winning racer—culminating in a Daytona photo finish and the brand’s first AMA Superbike crown.
Fifty years later, BMW Motorrad returns to Daytona not just to remember its breakthrough moment—but to reinterpret it for a new generation, blending heritage, craftsmanship, and modern superbike performance into one striking Superhooligan statement.
