Volvo is pushing the envelope in automotive safety again. Its new multi-adaptive safety belt, set to debut in the upcoming fully electric EX60 SUV, has just been named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025.
What Makes the Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt Special?
Unlike conventional seat belts, Volvo’s system dynamically adapts in real time, using data from both interior and exterior sensors. It tailors protection based on the occupant’s physical profile (height, weight, body shape) and seating position. In a severe crash, a larger occupant might receive a higher belt load setting (to reduce head injury risk), while in a milder crash a smaller occupant might experience a lower load (to reduce rib fractures). The system is upgradable over the air, meaning Volvo can enhance its capabilities over time using software updates.
Volvo continues to lean into its reputation as a safety innovator, integrating intelligence, personalization, and adaptability into core vehicle systems. By making the safety belt responsive (not passive), the company aims to better protect people in varied crash scenarios.
It’s not Volvo’s first feature to get this kind of recognition, either: last year the Driver Understanding System – which senses when a driver is distracted, tired, or impaired – also made TIME’s Best Inventions list.
When You’ll See It
The EX60, Volvo’s next fully electric SUV, is scheduled to be revealed on 21 January 2026 in a livestream from Stockholm. The multi-adaptive safety belt will be among its headline innovations.
