In a luxury SUV segment packed with oversized grilles, aggressive styling cues, and horsepower wars, Volvo’s flagship three-row SUV remains refreshingly Scandinavian. It’s understated, dapper, and confident enough not to care about the latest automotive trends. The Volvo brand has sort of always been that way.
For 2026, Volvo continues building on the extensive refresh introduced for the 2025 model year, adding faster infotainment hardware, software enhancements, and a few trim updates while leaving the XC90’s winning formula largely intact.
The XC90 has always been one of the most attractive luxury SUVs on the road, and that remains true for 2026. The front end features Volvo’s signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights flanking a revised grille, giving the SUV a sophisticated presence without appearing overly aggressive.
Its proportions remain nearly perfect. The XC90 looks substantial without feeling bulky, and unlike some competitors that seem determined to resemble rolling science fiction experiments, Volvo sticks with clean lines and tasteful detailing. The result is an SUV that will likely age gracefully for years to come.
The Ultra trim enhances the premium feel with larger wheels and upscale exterior touches. New Dark Theme variants are also available for buyers wanting blacked-out accents and a sportier appearance.
Step inside, and the XC90 reminds you why Volvo interiors are among the best in the business.
The cabin feels more like a modern luxury living room than a traditional SUV. High-quality leather, genuine wood trim, metal accents, and Volvo’s trademark minimalist design create an environment that’s relaxing rather than overwhelming. Every touchpoint feels thoughtfully crafted.
The Ultra trim brings ventilated Nappa leather seating, a head-up display, premium audio, and numerous comfort features that justify its position at the top of the lineup.
Even though the XC90 is approaching a decade on this generation’s architecture, it still feels fresh inside. The first and second rows are exceptionally comfortable, while the third row remains best suited for children or shorter trips. Cargo space is competitive, and the practical three-row layout makes it an excellent family hauler.
Under the hood, the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain continues to impress. It combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce a robust 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque.
The beauty of the T8 isn’t just performance. It offers approximately 33 miles of electric-only driving range and delivers EPA ratings of 26 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined after the battery is depleted. It is also rated at 58 MPGe when utilizing both gas and electric power.
For many commuters, daily errands can be accomplished largely on electricity, while the gasoline engine eliminates range anxiety during long road trips.
Volvo made meaningful improvements to the XC90’s technology for 2026. The SUV now benefits from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon-based infotainment platform, which delivers faster response times and sharper graphics than before. The updated Volvo Car UX interface is visually stunning and feels appropriately premium.
But here’s where I have a complaint.
The infotainment system is gorgeous to look at, featuring crisp graphics and a large touchscreen that integrates Google services and smartphone connectivity. Yet for all its visual appeal, it remains more cumbersome than it should be.
Simple tasks often require too many taps, and Volvo’s commitment to minimal physical buttons isn’t always beneficial. Basic functions that should be intuitive can require hunting through menus, which is frustrating while driving. Several reviewers have also noted the lack of physical controls and the reliance on digital interfaces for routine adjustments.
The system works. It’s fast. It looks fantastic. But intuitive? Not quite.
My tester was the XC90 T8 AWD Ultra and had an MSRP of $83,400 and a final price of $89,695, putting it firmly in premium luxury SUV territory.
The 2026 Volvo XC90 T8 AWD Ultra isn’t the newest luxury SUV on the block, and it doesn’t try to overwhelm you with gimmicks. Instead, it focuses on comfort, safety, elegance, and efficiency.
In a world where luxury SUVs increasingly try to be everything at once, the XC90 succeeds by simply being what Volvo does best: smart, safe, comfortable, and unapologetically Scandinavian. That’s a refreshing approach, and one that continues to age remarkably well.
