Off-road riding doesn’t have to begin with a machine that looks like it escaped from a Baja race. Sometimes, the best way to get into the sport is with something that is approachable, predictable and—most importantly—fun.
Honda is sticking with that philosophy for 2027, bringing back two of its entry-level sport ATVs: the TRX250X and TRX90X. One is aimed at older riders and newcomers to the sport, while the other is designed specifically to introduce younger riders to off-road recreation.
Both share a familiar Honda formula: relatively simple mechanicals, easy operation, durable construction and enough capability to keep riders interested after they’ve moved beyond the “which lever does what?” phase.
Honda TRX250X: An ATV You Can Actually Learn On
The 2027 Honda TRX250X is aimed at riders age 16 and older and occupies the increasingly useful space between youth ATV and high-performance sport quad.
Its 229cc air-cooled engine isn’t trying to win a drag race against something with twice the displacement. Instead, it provides manageable performance that allows newer riders to concentrate on learning how an ATV behaves rather than figuring out how to keep one pointed in the same direction.
Honda’s SportClutch system is a big part of that approachable character. It gives riders the engagement of a manual-style transmission without making the learning curve unnecessarily steep. For someone new to ATVs, that’s a useful combination: enough involvement to actually learn the mechanics of riding while remaining forgiving when the rider inevitably makes a few mistakes.
The TRX250X also gets a lightweight double-cradle steel chassis, independent double-wishbone front suspension and a rear swingarm with a single shock. Those aren’t particularly exotic specifications, but that’s sort of the point. The goal isn’t to build an ATV that requires a pit crew and a spreadsheet to operate. It’s to provide predictable handling across trails and terrain.
And predictable is good when you’re learning.
The TRX250X rolls into 2027 wearing Racing Blue and carries an MSRP of $5,549. Honda says availability is expected in October or November.
TRX90X: Starting Small
For younger riders, Honda is bringing back the TRX90X in red with an MSRP of $3,599.
The TRX90X has long been positioned as an introduction to ATV riding, and that makes sense. Teaching someone to ride off-road isn’t just about giving them a throttle and pointing them toward the nearest trail. It involves learning throttle control, steering, braking, balance and—perhaps most importantly—how to respect the terrain and the machine.
The TRX90X is designed around that learning process.
Its manageable performance and predictable power delivery are intended to help young riders build confidence without overwhelming them. For parents and guardians, Honda’s emphasis on thoughtful safety features and straightforward operation is arguably just as important as the engine and suspension.
After all, the perfect youth ATV isn’t necessarily the one with the most horsepower. It’s the one that helps a young rider develop enough skill to eventually want more horsepower.
That is how the cycle begins.
Honda expects the 2027 TRX90X to be available in October or November.
Keeping Off-Road Riding Approachable
There’s a tendency in the powersports world to focus on bigger, faster and more technically sophisticated machines. And that’s understandable. Nobody has ever put a 1,000cc ATV on the cover of a magazine because it was “adequate.”
But entry-level machines serve an important purpose.
The TRX90X gives younger riders a place to learn, while the TRX250X provides an accessible starting point for older riders. Neither is intended to be the final word in ATV performance. Instead, they’re designed to get riders comfortable with the sport in the first place.
That’s arguably more important.
An ATV that is easy to operate and predictable in its responses can make the difference between a first ride that builds confidence and one that ends with somebody questioning their recreational choices while sitting in the dirt.
Honda’s approach with these two models is refreshingly straightforward. Build something durable, make it easy to use, give it enough performance to be entertaining and let riders develop their skills.
The result isn’t particularly complicated—and it doesn’t need to be.
Sometimes the best off-road machine is simply the one that gets you out on the trail.

With the TRX250X and TRX90X, Honda isn’t trying to reinvent the ATV. It’s doing something considerably more useful: keeping the door open for the next generation of riders—and making sure there is still a machine on the other side of that door.
