Nissan has finally pulled the wraps off the 2016 Titan, showcasing the top-of-the-line and most powerful Titan XD Crew Cab at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. CarNewsCafe is front-row center at this biggest of auto shows and we saw the Titan up close and personal. We’ll have photos from the event as soon as they’re processed.
The 2016 Titan XD is massive. It’s wheelbase is more than ten inches longer than the previous-generation Titan (151.6 inches vs 139.8) and its length is 18 inches longer than the 2015 Titan (242.9 inches vs 224.6). Yet the width of the truck is basically the same at 79.4 inches (versus 79.5). Roof height is two inches higher at 78.7 inches which means two inches of headroom inside.
Everything about this new Titan XD is tough and work-ready. The massive Cummins V8 promised to be under the hood will over-deliver at a whopping 555 lb-ft of torque and 310 horsepower. That runs through a tough 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission. Suspension, framing, and more have all been beefed up to accommodate this diesel engine’s 2,000 payload capability and 12,000 towing capacity.
But the diesel isn’t the only show. The Titan XD is what’s on display, but the side notes made by Nissan really highlight what the company is doing with their full-sized truck. To be blunt: they’re going after the market. Hard.
The 2016 Nissan Titan will be offered in regular cab, King cab and Crew Cab configurations. It will have both four-wheel and two-wheel drive options for the drivetrain. Plus a surprise V6 engine, to be announced later, is in the lineup along with the powerful V8 and, of course, the big Cummins.
Nissan appears to be going for broke and wants to shake up the pickup truck industry. With the options the new Titan and Titan XD will have, including AroundView monitor, trailering controls, and more, they might just do it.
